Va. hunter found dead in safety harness near Smithfield

SMITHFIELD — A Norfolk man died while hunting in Isle of Wight County, apparently when he fell from a tree stand, according to the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

Kevin Stanley Beatty, 61, was found hanging from his safety harness Friday night west of Smithfield. Relatives called the property owner after Beatty didn’t return home.

Game Department spokesman Lee Walker said it appears Beatty may have been climbing down from the stand when a ladder broke.

The body was sent to a medical examiner’s office to determine the cause of death.
