Boston Marathon Google’s most searched event of 2013

Google’s annual Zeitgeist lists place the Boston Marathon bombings among the most searched stories of the year.

According to the lists, which are intended to gauge current global interests, “Boston Marathon” was the number one most searched event of 2013. The government shutdown came in second, followed by the Video Music Awards. The Boston Marathon was also the sixth most searched term overall.

“Boston Marathon bombing” was second on the list of “Top Trending.” Actor Paul Walker was first on the list, former South African President Nelson Mandela was third, and “Glee” star Cory Monteith was fourth. All three men died in 2013.

Former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez also garnered national attention after he was charged for his alleged connection to the murder of Boston resident Odin Lloyd in June. Aaron Hernandez was the 26th most Googled term overall and the most searched athlete.

While the Marathon attacks and Aaron Hernandez were among the most popularly searched terms nationwide, they did not come in first and second in Boston.
